Week 2: Monday 17th March 2014 UNIT X

Monday 17th March 2014:
Week 2:

UNSUCCESSFUL PRINTS

I have moved away from using the photocopier to create collages and scans and begun to use the scanner and Photoshop to edit. This has been a large improvement for quality and quantity of work for my practice.
Using Photoshop, I have been digital printing my collages and photographs onto fabric focusing on scale, colour and composition.  Initially I have chosen a canvas material but will refine fabric choice once I have re-evaluated the first printed samples.

Below are a selection of my first A4 fabric prints on canvas. The canvas fabric made the image quality poorer than I expected as it is a loose weave. I have selected a Crepe de chine for my next samples.
My focus on colour was also poor, the digital printer changed it from a pale red to a salmon colour, the samples have too many layers making them complicated and loosing the 'Moment' in time I am recreating instead they look like a collaged mess.

The digital print on a canvas fabric, the quality became poor due to using low quality images  and colour was not as I desired due to fabric choice.

Week 1: Monday 10th March: UNIT X

UNIT X

Monday 10th March 2014:
week 1: The concept behind my work is place, space and emotion; evoking emotion of the past through texture and surface pattern.

My own photographs of Manchester Royal Infirmary.

This week is the beginning week to unit X and continuing where I left off with the Practice unit. I have been out looking and taking photographs of public spaces and places from the old Manchester Royal Infirmary to The old Fire station. Within the photographs, I have been focusing on colour, texture, surface pattern, and creating that 'Moment.' Interested in places with history and memory

I have been scanning and combining these images to create new textures and surfaces.

Throughout the last unit, my work did not have enough sophistication: my samples were created using very basic techniques. My aim for this Final Major Project is to create sophisticated and professional samples by using digital print and photography.

I am an image maker, textile artist and inspired by a breadth of artists. Nigel Shafran is a photographer but inspired by the same concept and ideas.  The idea of capturing a space, to portray emotion and a sense of loss, past and memory.
