Week 20: Monday 24th Feburary 2014
Evaluation of overall Practice project:
The project as a whole has been challenging but also enjoyable. I have found it challenging as the project has been over a long period and although normal to experience highs and lows throughout it is something I have personally struggled with. Some weeks would be successful and others not so due to lack of material knowledge / lack of materials and specific research, it has been important to evaluate each week in order to problem solve and move the project forward. I hope my enjoyment within research and experimenting really comes across, reading, finding out about new artists, designers and theorists helps me communicate my concept, and the ideas are endless which I gain from all the research.
The minor project, was the first five weeks, in which I researched, gathered materials and started initial sampling, although all of these elements I have continued with throughout the live project and major project, it was important to have the initial five weeks as the minor project to enable the most of my time. From the images below it is clear how far my project has evolved, the research and experimentation has enabled me to create end samples which are of high quality and show time and progress.
Participating in the Live Paris Project, and gathering a work placement at Harvey Nichols Manchester, has enabled me to gain confidence within my work. By experiencing a job in which I would like a career, but by market research and contacting independent galleries, it has confirmed where my current practice context is.
For unit X I have ideas to continue with similar concepts of space place and revealing and concealing. I aim to combine fabric and stitch samples with more technical installation work.
I would like to finish this project with inspirational photographs from my work from Paris. Focusing on form, colour, texture and surface.

Gallery Visit to Manchester Art Gallery
An inspirational exhibition to visit, from her use of materials, film and the concept of time, Joana Vasconcelos leaves the viewer waiting for something to happen, the idea of playing with time leaves the viewer in the space of the installation for longer. The element I will take from her work is that nothing is permanent and the idea of the unknown leaves the participant waiting and emotionally responding to the work.

Week 19: Monday 17th February 2014
Monday 17th February 2014:
I currently have ideas for unit X, in which I would like to combine the white
stitched samples for Paris with the installation pieces I have created. In this
last week before hand in, I have been prepping my space by painting and
arranging my work into a small installation. It is important I go to unit X
with an idea already beginning. I will be continuing with this project and by using
skills and knowledge, I learnt on my work placement and a considered approach to
displaying my work I hope to achieve impact and provoke some type of emotion
within my audience.
In addition, I have helped others display their work and decide on arrangement and
placement of pieces, this is something I really enjoy and is definitely a
strong point of mine and my work.
Week 18: Monday 10th Feburary 2014
Monday 10th Feburary 2014
The
past three weeks have been deadline focused making it unable for me to continue
sampling around my major project. With all the resources and research I have
collected over the past few weeks I have revisited my primary research from original
photographs to drawings which has enabled me to create new collages.
Primary Research photographs focusing on texture tone and colour to enable me to create new collages.
Focusing
on texture, surface and space, these collages combine, stitch, scale colour and
drawing these collages are still inspired by the Dada movement and I have in
particular been looking at the work of Hannah Hoch and her timeless collages. Although
she uses figure, the combination of a found image and placement is very similar
to my work. The colour and similar tones make her work unique and recognisable
like mine.

CP3
DEADLINE
Researching and understanding the context of my
work is something I recently have got to grips with. After my work placement at
Harvey Nichols it made me realise working as a freelancer is something I want
to avoid, as there is an uncertainty of income and working with a different
team on a weekly basis. Although Visual Merchandising is something I want to
pursue as a career perhaps at management level would be more ideal, with
research and organisation being high priorities.
…But currently for my own practice, which is installation based smaller
independent art galleries would be suited. I have researched, and only in this
last week made contacts with these two art galleries, from ‘The Old Police
Station’ in London, which holds installations in the disused
prison cells to ‘Louise T Blouin Foundation’ which is a non- profit
organisation which holds art installations, film, photography and media
exhibitions.

I am inspired by many artists like Rachel Whiteread her work is gallery based and has a concept of lost memories and the unknown. Ultimately my work is for a small independent art gallery context, where audience experience and place and space come into play. I am currently waiting to hear back from the two in dependant galleries I have contacted.

Week 16: Monday 27th January 2014
Week 16: Monday 27th January 2014:
This week has been a strong focus on my Paris samples with the deadline Friday, I have embellished into my original samples using stitch, but they are too messy and complicated I need to simplify the amount of stitch. The samples that work the best are the ones where the paint touches the edges of the fabric. It is taking much longer than I thought to prep the samples with Gesso as it is taking a while to dry. The concept is working with the ideas of concealing and revealing hidden areas.
Friday 31st deadline for LIVE BREIF PARIS:
I have included the photographs of my final samples which will be sent to Paris. I simplified the stitched and coated each sample in 4 layers of Gesso. They represent texture and collage and the concept is about revealing and concealing history.
I have also handed my dissertation in this week so Monday can be a fresh week to continue with the rest of the project, I am apprehensive about going back to the original project as I feel lost with the concept and where I was before my work experience and Christmas.
